Welcome to Desert Island Dishes. The official website for the weekly podcast where chef Margie Broadhead talks to a special guest about their life with food.

Here you will find conversations with a whole range of different people discussing their Desert Island Dishes.

The act of sharing one’s favourite dishes is both deeply personal and fascinating. Margie is able to reveal a different side to the guest being interviewed and find out about much more than the dishes that have shaped their lives.

We will find out about their favourite childhood dishes, the dishes they eat the most often, and the dishes that mean the most to them. Of course we will also discover what their last dish would be before being cast off to the desert island. 

Each week Margie will select one of the guest's Desert Island Dishes to use as inspiration to create a recipe around. There are already lots of delicious recipes for you to look through and to inspire your cooking.

EPISODE 36: THOMASINA MIERS: CO FOUNDER OF WAHACA RESTAURANTS

My guest today is Thomasina Miers 

In 2005 Thomasina was the first winner of the revamped masterchef. She is now a Chef and food writer. She is also the owner of Wahaca, the seriously successful chain of Mexican restaurants. 

She has written 7 books to date, has a regular column in The Guardian, has opened another restaurant called DF MEXICO. 

In total she employs around 1500 people, she has three young children and is basically super -woman! 

After dabbling in the world of VAT and accounting, a chance meeting with Clarissa Dixon-Wright changed the course of Thomasina's career. She went from modelling Barbour bikinis to the world famous Ballymaloe cookery school and fell in love with cooking. After that she honed her craft, working at Villandry, writing cook books to support homeless charities and training under Skye Gyngell at Petersham Nurseries. 

Thomasina fell in love with Mexican food at a young age and after reconnecting with a friend from university they launched their hugely successful chain of Mexican restaurants - Wahaca to critical acclaim. I loved Thomasina's encouraging words that everyone finds their calling at different ages and not to be discouraged if you still haven't found what you want to do with you life. There is a whole host of delicious recipe ideas in this episode. I particularly love the sound of the onions, rice, peas and bacon cooked by her mum and the fresh prawns with homemade mayonnaise.
